St Clair 2016 Water Levels 3 Feet Over 2015

February 8, 2016

In a month-by-month comparison, January 2016 water level numbers came in three feet above the same period in 2015. Also, the trend line for 2016 is moving up while during the same period last year it was going down.

St Clair Water Levels February 2016The water levels for January hold true to the projection given in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers monthly forecast bulletin for Lake St. Clair published today (February 8th). As of today, the forecast that was made in January showed an increase in the water levels and the report shows that the actual levels matched the projected levels exactly.

Looking forward you can see that it shows a two-foot drop in the water levels over 2015 by July, if you accept the projection for the rest of the year. So a three-foot increase in January may not result in an increase in the water levels during the height of the bass tournament fishing season.

Lake St. Clair Water Levels Higher in 2016?

January 22, 2016

The Great Lakes water levels rise and fall in both long term and short term cycles. We are coming out of a low-level cycle and generally speaking, the waters are on the rise.

FOR MORE ON LONG TERM AND SHORT TERM GREAT LAKES CYCLES CLICK HERE TO SEE A PAPER FROM TEACH.GLIN.NET

So what will the levels be this year? Below is a chart from the US Army Corps of Engineers which will show the forecast going forward into our fishing season:

St Clair Montly Levels Jan 2016

There is an upper and lower range to this forecast, but the green line gives us the best estimate of what we can expect. As it stands, the December numbers are nearly identical to the same period in 2014. From that point, the projected levels stay high for 2016.

We will continue in higher water conditions than we were in 2013 if we stay at the projected levels. The potential for higher levels than last year shows in the forecast and that is probably helped by the fact that we are on the upside of the water levels cycle.

This forecast is updated monthly, and you can check it at:

Big Smallmouth in Fall on Lake St. Clair

October 13, 2014

Fall is a special time of year to chase smallmouth bass on Lake St. Clair. The bass are schooled up, aggressive and it is the time of year where you have the potential to catch the bass of a lifetime. Reports have been coming in about bigger smallies and tournament weights are up.

One one recent scouting trip we caught several including this 4 lb. 14oz smallmouth on a crankbait and others like this 3 1/2 lb. smallmouth caught on an Xtreme Bass Tackle St. Clair Goby NFT™ drop-shot tube. Both were caught in Canadian waters.

Caught in 8 feet of water on a crankbait this smallie went 4 lbs. 14 oz.

This one was only 3 1/2 lbs but it was in an area with many more smallmouth in 18 feet of water

Lake St. Clair – Those Other Fish (Multi-species #2)

August 20, 2014

May 20th, 2010

Andy Nester of Fenton, MI get\’s one that\’s a fish of a lifetime

Last Saturday also brought on a huge influx of those other fish that had no clue we were just fishing for bass.  It’s a good thing too!  Some anglers caught the fish of a lifetime and it just goes to show how diverse a fishery that Lake St. Clair really is.  That wasn’t the only one caught off of that boat Saturday.  A second musky was caught and released and the day had plenty of bass to keep it interesting in between.

Matt Bird has a lifetime of fishing experience behind him and appreciates a quality catch like this

After doing a fair share of pike fishing over the years lifting one out of the water by hand became something I was used to. Still, those toothy critters deserve some respect. It’s kinda like a backlash on a bait casting reel. I’ll make 200 casts then on cast 201 my concentration will lapse for a split second then the next thing you know I’m picking at the mono (or flouro, or braid) to get the loops out of the backlash. Well, picking up a pike or a musky can be the same kind of skill. No matter how many times you do it there isn’t much room for error as you can see in the last picture. In this case it isn’t my thumb but the thumb of one of our intrepid duo above. The last time this happened to me was when I was holding the musky under the gill area and it thrashed. I never lost control of the fish but its teeth grazed my thumb and that’s all it took to cut through the skin.

In spite of the dangers catching these freshwater barracuda is still amazing, but there’s more… Check out the photos from the DK Open on Saturday and you will see a couple more musky and a drum:

Tom Billings Continues to Catch Big Lake St. Clair Smallmouth

August 17, 2014
St. Clair Goby NFT™ drop-shot tube by Xtreme Bass Tackle™

St. Clair Goby NFT™ drop-shot tube by Xtreme Bass Tackle™

Tom Billings comes up for a fun trip this weekend and in spite of some high winds and boat chop manages to put together a livewell full of smallmouth at 4 1/2 lbs. or better all caught on the Xtreme Bass Tackle St. Clair Goby NFT drop-shot tube.

Although the river is your traditional pick for big fish this time of year he was able to get all of those bass in the Lake and on the U.S. side. That’s good news for any bass angler who is coming to Lake St. Clair to compete, or just enjoy this fishery!

Day two of Tom’s trip on Lake St. Clair he continued to catch smallmouth but then hooked the biggest fish of his life. This Middle Channel sturgeon was estimated to be 6 ft. long and took one hour to bring up to the boat. See video of the fight (not the whole hour of course) at Facebook (click on this link).
